History of the Fairgrounds

We will be continually updating this page as we find more history about the Fairgriunds.

We are publishing articles and pictures from the programs of the Last Chance Stampede & Fair from 1961 to present. Credit will be given when appropriate.

1868 - 1869 The were the first fairs in Helena history. The first was held October 14, 1868. After the "decided success" of the first fair, a second was held in late September and early October of 1869.

From 1870 until 1927, the Montana State Fair in Helena was held at what is now our very own Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds.

1969 - Fair events resume after a 30-year hiatus.
